Prime Minister Ramgoolam pays tribute to SSR, Father of the Nation

Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam paid a solemn tribute to the Father of the Nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, yesterday afternoon during a wreath-laying ceremony held at the SSR Botanical Garden. The event marked the 40th anniversary of the passing of SSR.
The commemorative ceremony brought together Ministers and Junior Ministers, Members of the National Assembly, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, and other eminent personalities, reflecting the enduring respect accorded to SSR’s contribution to the nation.
Born in 1900, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1900–1985) is revered for his pivotal role in the struggle for independence and the building of modern Mauritius. After completing his medical studies in London, he returned home and devoted his life to public service and national development.
Between 1940 and 1953, SSR held several important local offices, including Municipal Councillor and Mayor of Port Louis. As the country advanced toward self-government, he assumed key responsibilities within the colonial administration, notably as Secretary of the Treasury, Minister of Finance and Chief Minister. In 1965, he became Premier and was knighted by Elizabeth II in recognition of more than three decades of dedicated service.
Leader of the Independence Party, SSR guided Mauritius to independence in March 1968 and became the nation’s first Prime Minister, a position he held until June 1982. Under his leadership, Mauritius joined major international organisations, including the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity, strengthening its global standing. In 1976, he also served as Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity, underscoring his continental influence.
In December 1983, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was appointed Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Mauritius. A steadfast advocate of democracy, social justice and national unity, he laid the foundations of modern Mauritius through sustained investments in education, healthcare and social welfare. Four decades after his passing, his vision and values continue to inspire the nation, leaving an enduring legacy of unity, resilience and service to the people.
