During a site visit at the Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital in Constance, Flacq, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Kumar Bachoo, met with Dr Vinay Kumar, a visiting vascular surgeon from Yashoda Hospital.

The meeting forms part of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health and Wellness and Yashoda Hospital, which facilitates the treatment of Mauritian patients in India while also allowing Indian specialists to come to Mauritius to perform complex surgeries and provide training to local medical teams.

Dr Kumar is currently conducting specialised procedures on patients suffering from blocked or damaged blood vessels, including the creation of arterio-venous fistulas essential for dialysis patients, as well as surgeries for peripheral artery disease. During his stay, he has already performed around 20 surgeries, 14 of which were complex vascular cases.

Recalling that nearly 40% of the Mauritian population is affected by diabetes and that about 700 amputations are carried out annually, Minister Bachoo emphasised that the collaboration with specialists from Yashoda Hospital plays a crucial role in preventing amputations and improving the quality of advanced surgical care in Mauritius.
